Launch of Screen Malta and Presentation of 2022 Results
10 March 2023

2022 was a record year for the film industry in Malta. The best year in ten years.

Over €85 million were generated across 24 productions. Malta Film Commissioner Johann Grech said “this was the best year in the last ten years were we gave people the opportunity to work on
productions in Malta. Last year, over 900 Maltese and over 1,000foreigners worked in productions on the Maltese Islands.”

Minister for Tourism Clayton Bartolo remarked that the mentioned sum showcases the potential which the film industry possesses. “One should keep in mind that the film industry was an economic
vehicle which safeguarded people’s jobs and increased the country’s economic situation at times when recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic was still ongoing,” Bartolo added. Screen Malta will be the new brand image for the Malta Film Commission.

Grech insists, “We must achieve more results. We are ambitious. This is just the start and we are determined to building a sustainable film industry in Malta based on careers for everyone.”

The Malta Film Commission is working on a programme to attract more people to join the film industry to win more productions on the Maltese Islands.

Johann Grech emphasised for closer collaboration between Government and the private sector for a more comprehensive outreach, resulting in increased opportunities for Malta’s film industry.
